(Approx. Drive Time from Phoenix: 45min)
Tucked away off State Route 88, Lost Dutchman State Park serves as the western gateway to Arizona’s Superstition Mountains. Despite being rated #1 out of 31 Arizona state parks by AllTrails, I’ve found it to be one of the lesser known parks outside of Phoenix. This makes it the ideal day trip for an adventurous visitor or local.
Named after the legend of a lost gold mine, the Lost Dutchman offers unique jaggedy mountain views across a backdrop of an expansive, cactus-lined desert. When I visit, I typically take the Treasure Loop Trail. The 2.3-mile loop offers a variety of terrains and views, with offshoots to other trails for the more adventurous. With limited food options nearby, I recommend packing a lunch or dinner and talking advantage of the picnic areas at the park!
